As disorienting as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who might not perceive it completely novel. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into a figure of hate who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense about him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. The obvious and direct truth that the Savior of the gospels calls for a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the fifties it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.

A Battle for the Finest of Us

So I have been heartened to observe the steadfast resistance against Trump develop during the previous year. It has been great solace to help build the initiative that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to turn out in significant amounts during minor elections. We shall require to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.
